Mohammad Tajul Islam, a former chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, has urged that a film be made about the July uprising, saying he would help fund it himself if necessary. “If the state does not provide funds to make a film about July, I will give money to that fund even if I have to sell my own car,” he said, calling on capable film directors to come forward. “If need be, I will not even hesitate to sell my blood for the fund.”

He was speaking on Saturday at a special audio-visual publication event organized by the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation. Making films of the correct history was very necessary, Tajul said, to counter “collaborators of the fascists” who were trying to falsely portray the July revolution as “militant activity” or “CDI.” To immortalize what he called this heroic chapter of history and repay the debt of the martyrs’ blood, he said, quality cinema based on July needed to be made.

Describing the July revolution as an epic uprising and an unequal war, Tajul said: “One side used weapons, and the other used their chests as shields.” Highlighting the plight of the injured in hospitals, he said that on the orders of the then-dictator a “no release, no treatment” policy had been followed, so that the wounded were not operated on and were not even given anesthesia during dressing.
