Samrat Hossain Bappa (41), a Jamaat-e-Islami youth and sports wing leader, died while undergoing treatment after being beaten in a land dispute. He died late Saturday night at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Bappa was the vice-president of Dupchanchia Sadar Union Jamaat-e-Islami’s youth and sports division in Bogra. He was the son of Rafiq Akanda of Velurchak village.

Dupchanchia police station OC Tajmilur Rahman said Bappa died around midnight Saturday at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Police and local sources said a long-running land dispute between Rafiq Akanda and his younger brother Abdul Karim Akanda escalated into a physical confrontation on June 25. Abdul Karim allegedly attacked Rafiq with his associates. Bappa was injured while trying to protect his father. Rafiq and his wife Josna Begum were also injured and hospitalized in Bogra.

Bappa’s condition deteriorated and he was transferred to Dhaka, where he died. His mother Josna Begum filed a case against Abdul Karim and seven others on June 27. Police arrested Abdul Karim — a former BNP ward-level general secretary — and his wife from Joypurhat’s Akkelpur on July 1.

The OC said: “The two brothers have different political affiliations — one BNP, the other Jamaat. The clash arose from a land dispute, and one person was injured and later died during treatment. Investigation is ongoing.”
