President Md Sahabuddin submitted his resignation letter to the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, on Friday over serious health reasons. The Speaker accepted the resignation letter at 5:01 p.m.
The information was given in a statement signed by the president’s press secretary, Md Sarwar Alam, at about 5 p.m. on Friday.
In the resignation letter addressed to the Speaker, the statement said, the president wrote: “I am seriously ill. I am suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney complications. I have had bypass surgery on my heart. In recent health checks a condition called autonomic neuropathy has been detected. Because of this condition I sometimes lose consciousness briefly. Owing to physical and mental incapacity from the onset of these conditions, it is no longer possible for me to discharge the duties of a constitutional office as important as that of president. I need long-term treatment.”
The president also wrote: “In these circumstances, in accordance with the provision of article 50(3) of the constitution, I resign from the office of president.”
Under article 54 of the constitution, the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad will act as president until a new president is elected and takes office.
Md Sahabuddin took office as the 22nd president of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023.
