Vandalism and a protest have taken place at the office of the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) in Fulchhari, Gaibandha, over a demand to cancel a list of people hired for family-card work.
The tense situation developed on Tuesday (11 August) afternoon.
It emerged that in the morning the upazila administration published a list of new job applicants for the posts of family-card data collector and supervisor, and tension spread in the area over the list. Around 1pm, leaders and workers of the BNP, Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal and NCP, along with people who had not got jobs, came to the UNO office grounds in a protest march.
At one point the angry crowd entered the UNO office and smashed the window glass of a second-floor office room and several chairs. Senior BNP leaders later arrived and calmed the situation.
The protesters claimed the hiring list had favoured Awami League members and their relatives, and demanded that it be cancelled immediately.
Fulchhari UNO Mostafizur Rahman denied all the allegations, saying 73 people had been given jobs on merit and by the rules from more than 1,000 applications. A section angered mainly at not getting jobs had carried out the vandalism, he said, adding that extra vigilance had been put in place in the area to keep the situation calm.
