A human chain was held at the Gangni bus stand square in Meherpur to demand good governance at Islami Bank and to protest allegations of various irregularities and looting at the bank. Organised by the Islami Bank Customer Forum, Gangni, the human chain was held at 10am on Thursday (4 June) and drew about a hundred customers. They displayed banners and placards bearing various slogans and demanded accountability and transparency in the banking sector.

Speakers said the allegations of irregularities and embezzlement that have arisen around Islami Bank in the past must be properly investigated and tried. They also demanded the reform measures needed to protect the bank’s interests.

The customers raised a seven-point demand. These included the resignation of Islami Bank chairman Khurshid Alam; the reinstatement of former managing director Omar Faruk Khan; the removal from the bank’s board of directors of those involved in the looting; the repeal of Section 18(a) of the Bank Resolution Act; recovering the looted money by selling the ownership and domestic assets seized by S Alam Group; ensuring that S Alam cannot regain control of any bank in future; and bringing those involved in looting the bank under exemplary punishment.

Speakers said these demands must be implemented quickly to protect customers’ interests and the stability of the country’s banking sector. Otherwise, they warned, they would announce tougher programmes. After the human chain, participants ended the programme peacefully.
