A man has given a confessional statement in court admitting his role in the killing of his teenage daughter in Khulna and has been sent to jail. A Khulna metropolitan magistrate recorded his statement on Sunday and ordered him sent to jail. He had been arrested from a shop in a market in Dumuria upazila on Saturday afternoon by RAB and Khulna Sadar police. Earlier, on 10 July, the girl’s mother had given a confessional statement in court admitting responsibility for her daughter’s killing.

The case’s investigating officer, a Khulna police sub-inspector, said the father had been questioned extensively after his arrest and had given important information about the killing, and that he was taken to court after he agreed to make a statement voluntarily.

According to a police account, the girl had left the family home on the morning of 8 July intending to go away with a man, and family members brought her back. That afternoon an argument broke out between the girl and her mother, during which, police say, there was a physical struggle; the father then intervened, and the girl was fatally injured. The family’s later attempts to save her failed. Police allege the body was then hidden, moved by motorcycle and eventually left on a quiet road in a residential area on the city’s outskirts, after which the parents fled.

The officer-in-charge of Khulna Sadar police station said the cause of the killing could not be determined at first after the body was recovered, and the victim’s identity was not immediately established; it was confirmed the next day after a photo was circulated. The mother was later brought to the station and, after initially declining to speak about the killing, gave a detailed account. The father’s motorcycle was recovered six days after the incident, and he was arrested from a tea shop in a Dumuria market 10 days later, police said.
