U.S. President Donald Trump said he wanted to resolve tensions in the Middle East through a diplomatic agreement rather than military conflict. He made the comments to reporters aboard Air Force One.

Discussing tensions in the Persian Gulf, possible military action and upcoming talks, Trump said he did not want people to be killed and preferred reaching an agreement.

Indirectly mediated talks between the United States and Iran are expected to begin. Trump said a war would have been disastrous for Iran. Military operations have been suspended for now after contacts from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iran created the possibility of an agreement, he said.

Trump linked a possible deal to the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and progress toward dismantling Iran’s nuclear program. He set no deadline for negotiations but reiterated that the United States was prepared to take military action at any time if necessary.

His remarks came amid diplomatic efforts through regional mediators to lift restrictions affecting the Strait of Hormuz and address Iran’s nuclear program.
