Dr Shafiqul Islam Masud MP, a member of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s central executive council, said the country’s economy would be at risk if the government failed to take the right decisions over Islami Bank. He said Islami Bank was not just a conventional bank; rather, the backbone of this country’s economy depended on it. To continue the contribution Islami Bank has made to the country’s economy, he said, a board of directors made up of the bank’s true owners must be formed, the money laundered through the fallen S Alam Group must be brought back, and the S Alam associates inside Islami Bank must be identified and the necessary steps taken. He made the remarks as chief guest at a selected-members (rukon) education camp of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Shyampur zone on Friday. Dr Masud added that, to ensure the protection of people’s deposits, Islami Bank’s board of directors must be formed of honest, capable and principled people. As the opposition, he said, Jamaat-e-Islami stood ready to give the government the necessary cooperation to save the country’s economy from destruction.
He said that in a democratic system both the governing party and the opposition must play an equal role in the state’s development and progress. Jamaat-e-Islami was moving forward by playing that role, he said, and would give the government the fullest cooperation in any need of the country and the nation.
The education camp was presided over by Syed Joynul Abedin MP, a Dhaka City South work-council member and Shyampur zone director, and conducted by assistant zone director and Kadamtoli Central thana Amir Mohammad Mohiuddin, with Dhaka City South Naib-e-Amir Abdus Sabur Faqir as special guest.
Others who spoke included city Ulama-affairs secretary Maulana Mufti Mohiuddin, Kadamtoli zone assistant director Abdur Rahim Jibon and Jatrabari thana Amir Maulana Sadiq Billah.
