WASHINGTON — Surprise Iranian strikes have caused widespread damage to US bases and equipment across the Middle East, NBC News reported, citing several US officials and people familiar with the situation.
Officials told NBC News that the destruction has been far greater than what has been disclosed publicly so far, and that repairs are expected to cost hundreds of billions of dollars.
Tehran began retaliatory strikes across the Middle East after Israel and the United States launched attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, hitting key military bases in at least seven countries. Iranian forces struck arsenals, command centers, air bases and satellite communication hubs.
The strikes damaged runways, radar systems and even warplanes in those countries, the report said. An older Iranian F-5 fighter jet was able to penetrate the powerful US air defense system, according to the report.
The US Defense Department has not released full details of the damage caused by the Iranian strikes. US Central Command declined to comment on the losses.
Some Republican leaders in the United States have expressed frustration over the lack of detailed information on the damage. The Pentagon has requested $200 billion from the US Congress.
The report said US forces spent $11 billion in the first week of the conflict. Before the war began, President Donald Trump announced a $1.5 trillion defense budget allocation.
