BAMAKO — Mali’s defense minister, Gen. Sadio Camara, has been killed in coordinated attacks on military bases in the West African junta-ruled country, Qatar-based Al Jazeera reported, citing sources.

According to the report, Camara’s home in the garrison town of Kati was attacked first. News of his death came one day later.

Earlier, BBC reported that gunmen had launched widespread attacks across Mali. The country’s military confirmed that attacks were under way in the capital, Bamako, and other locations.

Various armed groups were involved in the attacks. On Saturday (April 25) morning, the country’s military said terrorist groups had attacked army barracks in Bamako and other military-controlled areas.

An eyewitness told Reuters that gunfire was reported across Mali.

Mali is currently ruled by a military junta led by Gen. Assimi Goita, who first seized power in a coup in 2020.
