This year’s HSC and equivalent examinations will be held nationwide with the same question papers, and in future the common subjects of madrasa and technical education will also have the same questions, the Minister for Education and Primary and Mass Education, Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon, has said. ‘We do not want any discrimination in education,’ he said.
He was speaking on Monday at a ceremony to present the Deans’ Award and the Vice-Chancellor’s Award 2026, marking the 20th founding anniversary of Noakhali Science and Technology University.
‘The world’s population is falling and ours is rising; this is no curse,’ the minister said. ‘It would not have to be called a curse if it were turned into human resources. Had we educated this population through technical education, it would have become a resource. We are giving importance to technical education, moral education and sports.’
Highlighting the teacher shortage, he said: ‘We have a head-teacher crisis. Many teachers have retired because of a High Court case. This problem started in 2017, but for all this time no one addressed it. I took the matter seriously as soon as I became minister. Because of the case over head teachers, 32,000 of the country’s 65,000 head teachers do not get promotion. After I raised it in parliament, it came to the court’s notice, and it will be resolved on July 2. Arrangements are also being made for the transfer of MPO-listed teachers.’
On the salaries of madrasa teachers, the minister said: ‘Salaries of 500 crore taka have to be paid every month. The previous government made appointments but did not arrange salaries. There was no salary budget for these teachers.’ He expressed the hope that they would receive regular salaries in future.
Milon said: ‘In future, we will gradually cross an allocation of 4 percent of GDP for education. To do well in the QS rankings, you do not have what is needed beyond studies. I first heard of the blue economy from the late President Ziaur Rahman. We saw how he used to encourage students, that alongside politics one must also study.’
‘We passed the Bogura University bill last week, and it will have new subjects. For the first time, a university like those in Europe and America is being set up,’ he said. ‘There is also space for such a university in Noakhali. We hope to receive a proposal from the UGC chairman, Mamun, to establish a Noakhali university.’
At the ceremony, 49 distinguished teachers and students were given the Deans’ Award and three teachers the Vice-Chancellor’s Award. The Noakhali-4 member of parliament, Md Shahjahan, was present as special guest, along with the UGC chairman, Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed, and the pro-vice-chancellor of Noakhali Science and Technology University, Professor Dr Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, among others. The university’s vice-chancellor, Dr Golam Rabbani, presided.
