Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haque, president of the Bangla Academy and former chairman of Dhaka University’s Bangla department, has died. He breathed his last on Sunday afternoon in Mirpur, Dhaka. He was 85.
Mohammad Azam, director general of the Bangla Academy and a student of Professor Fazlul Haque, confirmed the death. He said the professor collapsed while eating at a restaurant in Mirpur-1 between 2:30pm and 3pm and died before reaching the hospital.
Professor Fazlul Haque was born in 1941 in Kandia village of Jessore’s Abhaynagar upazila. He received the Bangla Academy Award in 1981. In addition to editing the periodicals “Sundaram” and “Lokayat,” he authored more than 20 books including “Ekushey February Andolan,” “Rajniti Darshan,” “Sahitya Chinta,” and “Sanskritir Sahaj Katha.”
