A serious knee injury once left Lisandro Martinez contemplating the end of his football career. But the birth of his daughter gave the Argentine defender renewed purpose.
Martinez played a crucial role in Argentina’s round-of-32 victory over Cape Verde, yet just a year ago, a torn anterior cruciate ligament had cast doubt over his entire career.
In a recent interview, the Manchester United star spoke openly about his mental struggle during his darkest period. “I was in a really bad place,” he said. “I even thought about retiring.”
The birth of his daughter proved to be a turning point. “Then my daughter was born, and everything fell back into balance,” Martinez said.
Watching his wife go through childbirth transformed his outlook. “I saw my wife give birth and how hard she worked through it,” he recalled. “That’s when I told myself: how can I not keep fighting?”
Martinez’s form in the ongoing World Cup has demonstrated a complete recovery. He scored in stoppage time against Cape Verde to put Argentina ahead for the second time, before an own goal sealed the victory in extra time.
