Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said: “We have set a target of raising public investment in education to 5 percent of GDP, gradually and continuously.” He said this in his budget speech in parliament on Thursday afternoon.
The finance minister said education was one of the most crisis-hit sectors of a state structure broken down over the long period of “fascism.” “Through the July mass uprising that has brought us back to a democratic Bangladesh, carrying the aspirations of the youth, we must build a Bangladesh for our future generations in which students grow into honest, capable, skilled and responsible citizens,” he said. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is taking an initiative to transform the curriculum so that students develop moral values, social responsibility, leadership qualities and humane character, he added.
The minister said: “We want to create an environment for students and teachers in which they can develop their fullest potential through modern education, training and facilities. We want to give special importance in the curriculum to technical and vocational education, third-language learning, the development of sports and culture, technology-based education and ‘Learning with Happiness.'”
