Junior Foreign Minister Shama Obaid Islam has said the government decided to appoint two junior ministers to the Foreign Ministry because the scope, workload and pace of work there have increased far beyond any previous period.
She made the remarks Saturday, August 22, responding to journalists’ questions at a hotel in the capital.
On Friday, August 21, the government also gave the prime minister’s foreign affairs adviser, Humayun Kabir, responsibility as junior foreign minister. A notification assigning him that responsibility was issued the same day.
Asked about this, Shama Obaid said far more work has been done at the Foreign Ministry over the past six months than in any period over the last 17 years. “We’ve launched several new wings,” she said. “We’re working to curb migration and irregular migration. We’ve also formed inter-ministerial focal-point committees with the ministries of expatriate welfare, culture, labor and commerce, which didn’t exist before.”
She added that the Foreign Ministry’s scope of work, workload and pace have increased far beyond any previous period, and that the government decided to appoint two junior ministers there specifically to make the ministry’s work easier and further speed things up.
