Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s performance in the recently concluded 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season has generated wide debate across the cricket world. At just 15, in his first full IPL season, he caught the eye by setting one record after another.

Playing for Rajasthan Royals, he won the Orange Cap with 776 runs in 16 matches, averaging 48.50 at a strike rate of 237.31. He struck 72 sixes across the tournament, dominating opposition bowlers.

Alongside the Orange Cap, he also claimed the MVP, Super Striker, Emerging Player and most-sixes awards. After a brief outing in 2025, his IPL career figures at the close of the 2026 season stand at 1,028 runs in 23 matches, at an average of 44.69 and a strike rate of 228.95, with two centuries and six half-centuries.

Such numbers have, inevitably, prompted comparisons with the IPL’s legendary batters, and on many measures he comes out ahead. Chris Gayle scored 1,071 runs in 28 matches in his first full IPL stint; while Gayle leads narrowly on aggregate, Suryavanshi has scored nearly as many in five fewer matches, and at a far higher strike rate.

The early-career IPL numbers of AB de Villiers, David Warner, Suresh Raina, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma also trail Suryavanshi’s current haul. Even Virat Kohli’s opening figures were comparatively modest.

According to analysts, the most striking aspect of Suryavanshi’s success is not the runs alone but his ability to change the course of a match, batting aggressively from the powerplay to repeatedly hand his side a solid platform.

Experts caution, however, against ranking him among the IPL’s all-time greats just yet. Sustained performance over the years, delivering in decisive matches and passing the test of time all still lie ahead.

Even so, on one point almost everyone agrees: judged on a first full IPL season, the cricket world has not seen a start as fast, as consistent and as explosive as Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s.
