Dr Shafiqur Rahman, amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and leader of the opposition in parliament, has said that people’s fundamental rights have not been established and that corruption, irregularities and injustice have instead increased in society.

“It has established irregularities, corruption and partisanship in the judiciary and education,” he said. “The present government is walking the path Hasina’s government showed. This government is denying the referendum and is not implementing the July Charter.”

He was speaking as chief guest at the 2026 rukon (full members’) conference organised by Gazipur city Jamaat on Friday morning, 16 October, at the Shaheed Abdul Malek auditorium in Gazipur.

“Before the last election, one party went around saying all problems would be solved once the election was held,” Shafiqur Rahman said. “Yet the problems have now doubled. The demand of the people at large was to establish a society based on justice.”

“If things go on like this, your destination will be the same as Hasina’s,” he added.

Recalling the hopes of Jamaat-e-Islami and young people in 2024, the Jamaat amir said: “In 2024 Jamaat-e-Islami and the young expected a Bangladesh free of exploitation and based on justice, with no discrimination. In this government’s time a new dimension of discrimination has been added. As under the last government, there is partisanship and looting on campuses and a cut taken from development work.”

On the state of the Muslim world, he said: “Because there is no unity among us, and because the ideals of the Prophet (peace be upon him) are ignored in Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries, the Muslim world is suffering today. In the present situation it seems power has passed from the hands of a dictatorship into those of another looter. Against this, the people think Jamaat-e-Islami is the only safe haven.”

Addressing the rukons, Shafiqur Rahman said: “We must move forward in the Islamic spirit, holding the Quran close to our hearts. We must control our nafs, control ourselves and our families. Most people in society make requests, so we must respect people and treat people in society well.”

“Islam was not established by the sword alone,” he said. “Drawn by the Prophet’s conduct, 1 lakh 20 thousand non-Muslims became Muslims at the Farewell Hajj. Everyone must taste death at some point, so let the end come in the midst of good deeds. No one should be involved with interest; interest is forbidden in every circumstance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) won Medina and the whole world with the sword of good deeds.”

The Jamaat amir added: “Humans were created to serve Allah from birth until death.”

The conference was chaired by Gazipur city Jamaat amir Professor Jamal Uddin. At the start, Maulana Abdul Halim gave a dars on the Quran, and artists of the Deshiyo Sahitya Sangskritik Sangsad performed Islamic songs.
