Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Amir and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman met with television channel chief executives and senior journalists.
The meeting was held Wednesday morning at the Leader of the Opposition’s official residence on Minto Road in the capital. Chaired by the leader of the opposition, it was attended by top executives and senior journalists from various leading television channels in the country.
The meeting, which began at its scheduled time of 11:30 a.m., discussed the media’s expectations and direction in building a new Bangladesh.
After the meeting, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Prof Mia Golam Parwar spoke with journalists. He said the Jamaat amir had raised the country’s current political situation and various public problems during the meeting.
The Jamaat amir raised the political crisis created by the failure to implement the verdict of the referendum held alongside the 13th national parliamentary election, according to Parwar. He also reiterated Jamaat’s sincere role, both inside and outside parliament.
Several senior journalists voiced support for both the ruling party and the opposition abiding by the verdict of the referendum, held in accordance with the July Charter. They urged that parties be given a clear message to accept the verdict without dissent.
At the meeting, the Jamaat amir also raised the power and gas crisis, rising commodity prices, extremism and various instances of partisan appointments in institutions.
The Jamaat amir told the meeting that electronic media should not limit itself to reporting news, but could play a stronger role in building national awareness and unity. Dr Shafiqur Rahman also called on the journalists present to openly point out Jamaat-e-Islami’s own shortcomings and offer constructive criticism.
