Police have recovered the body of Nurul Islam Hawlader, 60, who was accused of hacking his younger brother to death, in Kathalia upazila of Jhalakathi.
The body was recovered on Saturday (17 October) afternoon in South Mohishkandi village of Chenchri Rampur union in the upazila.
Nurul Islam was the son of the late Momin Uddin Hawlader of South Mohishkandi village.
According to police and local sources, Nurul Islam was accused of hacking his younger brother, Bellal Hawlader, to death about three or four years ago. Their sister, Firoza Begum, filed a murder case with Kathalia police station over the killing. Nurul Islam spent about two years in jail in that case and was released on bail a year ago.
Relatives said Firoza Begum, the plaintiff in the case, came to Nurul Islam’s house on Friday (16 October) to sell a piece of land. When Nurul Islam asked her to withdraw the case, the two argued.
Relatives said Nurul Islam took his own life at some point between 10am and 11:30am on Saturday, on a neighbour’s land beside his house. Local residents found the body and informed the police.
His son, an auto-rickshaw driver, and his wife said the long-running case and the strain within the family may have led him to it.
Abu Naser Raihan, officer-in-charge of Kathalia police station, said police went to the scene on receiving the news and recovered the body. It is being sent to the Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination, and legal steps are under way, he said.
