Iran will not respond by the familiar rules if the United States and Israel launch any new aggression, a top Iranian security official has warned. The stern statement came amid reports that the United States may use against Iran its so-called “mother of all bombs”, a weapon of enormous power.

Iran’s English-language channel Press TV reported on October 18 that Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the country’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Iran’s new war plan will not follow the familiar pattern of the United States and Israel.” He added that recent threats from US and Israeli officials could not change reality, and that the armed forces had been kept ready to answer any military adventurism.

The threat of the “mother of all bombs”

The US military has finalised plans for a strike that could use the GBU-43/B, known as the “mother of all bombs”. It is the largest non-nuclear bomb in the US arsenal. In the early 2000s one bomb cost about $170,000 to make; with inflation the cost is now much higher.

The bomb has been dropped only once, during Donald Trump’s first term, in Achin district of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province. That strike, aimed at a tunnel, also killed a teacher and his young son.

“Fingers on the trigger”

Brigadier General Alireza Sheikh, deputy chief of the Iranian army, also spoke about the US threats. He said plainly that his forces were ready for any situation.

Calling the US threat psychological propaganda, he said: “There is an attempt to frighten the Iranian people into backing down. We have no reason to worry.”

“If they drop the mother of all bombs, our people are the father of all bombs,” he added. “The resistance of these people will be far stronger than the enemy’s tactics. No civilisation can be destroyed by bombing.” He said Iran’s military equipment had been modernised and that every soldier now had a finger on the trigger.
