Police have recovered the body of a farmer named Rayet, 57, hanging from a tree in Jibannagar, Chuadanga.
The body was recovered at about 6:30am on Friday, 16 October, in Gayeshpur Mathpara village of Simanta union in the upazila. An unnatural death case has been filed with the police station.
Rayet was the son of the late Fakir Chan of Gayeshpur Mathpara village. His family say he had a mental illness.
According to his family and local sources, Rayet left home at about 12:30am on Thursday night. On Friday morning his body was found hanging from a neem tree in a field about 200 yards from his home. It is thought at first that family pressure and mental health problems may have led him to take his own life, but the actual cause has not been confirmed.
Jibannagar police completed an inquest report and the necessary legal formalities and handed the body to the family at about 3:30pm.
Saiful Islam Puku, member for the ward on the Simanta union parishad, confirmed the incident. “Rayet was somewhat mentally unstable,” he said. “He left home on the night of the incident. His body was later seen hanging from a neem tree in the field.”
Jibannagar police station OC Solaiman Sheikh said: “For now it is thought to be a suicide, but the actual cause can be told only after we receive the post-mortem report.”
