Only one of the 17 students who sat the 2026 HSC examination from Jibannagar Technical School and College in Chuadanga passed, a pass rate of 5.88 percent. The college section has 15 teachers, and the institution has seven other officials and staff.
The result came to light after the HSC and equivalent results of the country’s 11 education boards were published at around 11am on Saturday (31 October).
Across Jibannagar upazila’s four general colleges, the combined pass rate this year was 52.64 percent. Of 804 registered candidates, 777 sat the examination and 409 passed. Of them, 18 received GPA-5.
At the upazila’s only technical college, Jibannagar Technical School and College, 17 sat the examination and only one passed; 16 failed and nobody received GPA-5. In all, 410 students passed from the upazila’s five institutions.
What has drawn most comment is the number of teachers against the number of candidates: 15 teachers in the college section for only 17 examinees, besides the officials and staff. Parents and local residents are asking why results are so poor with so many teachers.
Local people allege that irregular classes, teachers’ indifference to students and a lack of proper academic supervision are steadily lowering the standard of teaching. They want the college’s teaching, teachers’ attendance, students’ class attendance and overall management investigated.
“We admit our children to the college hoping for good results,” one parent said. “But if students cannot pass even with so many teachers, what future do our children have? Appointing teachers is not enough. Regular classes and close attention to students’ studies must be ensured.”
Acting principal Engineer Md Imrul Kadir said, “Our college’s result in this year’s HSC examination was not as expected. It is disappointing for us. Students not attending classes regularly, inattention to studies and poor exam preparation affected the result.”
He said the college also has a shortage of teachers in the classroom, and students were weak in higher mathematics, English and information and communication technology. “We are reviewing this seriously. We will take the steps needed to ensure regular attendance, give special lessons to weak students and raise the standard of teaching, so that a result like this does not happen again,” he said.
Local residents have called for a review of the college’s teaching and academic management to find the real reason for such a result given the number of teachers.
