The prime minister made a surprise visit to Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute at midday on Saturday (17 October). He toured several departments of the hospital and looked at the working conditions of doctors and health workers and the overall cleanliness.
At one point during the visit, the prime minister went into the room of the hospital’s associate professor Rafiqul Islam and saw him smoking. He also found the room untidy. The prime minister expressed displeasure that a doctor at an important health facility should behave like this and keep such unclean surroundings. Tarique Rahman then told Professor Dr AKM Azizul Haque, chairman of the hospital’s board of management, to take action against the doctor. Following the prime minister’s instruction, Dr Rafiqul Islam was suspended.
During the visit, the prime minister stressed keeping the hospital hygienic, ensuring cleanliness, and doctors and all others concerned carrying out their duties responsibly.
