DHAKA, Sept. 26 — Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar has expressed deep concern, anger and protest over reports that hundreds of candidates finally selected for assistant teacher posts in government primary schools have not received appointment letters.

In a statement Friday, Parwar said published information showed at least 778 finally selected candidates in 27 districts had allegedly not received appointment letters. Many candidates also claimed they were excluded from recruitment in the name of verification. He called the matter extremely serious and an ominous sign for transparency and neutrality in state recruitment.

Parwar said the candidates had passed all required stages, including written and oral examinations, before final selection. He asked under what law, by what standard and on whose decision they were suddenly excluded. He said many candidates had alleged they were not appointed despite final selection because of political identity, family background, ideology or social status.

He said people believe government jobs are not rewards for loyalty to any party. Political or family identity cannot replace merit and qualifications, he said.

Parwar said the nation had the right to know who had been excluded from the finally selected candidates, why they were excluded and which authority made the decisions. He said the government would have to take responsibility if talented young people were harassed or deprived in the name of verification.

The Jamaat secretary general urged the government to immediately publish a full list of finally selected candidates who had not received appointment letters, state the specific reason in each case and make the verification standards public.

He said any innocent selected candidate who had been unfairly deprived must receive redress immediately. He also called for an impartial investigation into allegations of irregularities or discrimination in the recruitment process and accountability for those responsible. Any candidate unfairly excluded should be appointed, he said.
