DHAKA — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has nominated Bilkis Islam of Nilphamari for a reserved women’s seat in the 13th Parliament.

Islam had sought party nomination for the 13th general election.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the BNP’s senior joint secretary general, announced the names of the nominees at a news conference Monday afternoon at the party’s central office in Nayapaltan.

Islam is a member of the BNP’s executive committee and senior vice president of the Saidpur political district unit in Nilphamari. She was a member of the reserved women’s seat in the 8th Parliament.

According to party leaders and activists, the BNP nominated Islam for her active role in street-level movements, organizational skills and family political legacy. She has long been involved with the BNP’s grassroots politics and has played an active role in various social and political movements, particularly in women’s rights, expanding education and standing by the helpless, they said.

“I express my gratitude to the party for giving me the nomination,” Islam said. “I have always tried to stand by the people and develop the area. Given the opportunity to go to Parliament, I want to speak about the development of women, the country and the area.”
