GENEVA — Switzerland’s Federal Electricity Commission has warned that the ongoing U.S.-Israel war with Iran has created uncertainty over natural gas supplies for the coming winter, Al Jazeera reported Thursday.

The commission said that if the situation worsens, the stability of power supplies across Europe and Switzerland could also come under threat.

A large share of Europe’s energy demand depends on the Middle East. As a result, the conflict around Iran and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are having a significant impact on European energy markets.

In response to U.S.-Israeli attacks that began Feb. 28, Iran effectively halted oil and gas exports through the Strait of Hormuz to all countries other than itself, international observers said. The move has held up about one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies.

If the crisis is prolonged, energy prices across Europe could rise further and power supplies could come under strain during the winter season.
