During his surprise visits to hospitals and educational institutions in the capital, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also went to Dhaka Residential Model College, where he once studied. He spoke with students there and addressed them, calling on the young generation to come forward to keep the country clean and green.
The prime minister visited the college in Mohammadpur on Saturday afternoon (17 October). At his former school, he talked with students and urged them to play an active role in building the country.
Addressing the students, the prime minister said the government alone cannot make the country clean and liveable. Everyone has to work together, he said. Young people in particular should keep their homes, schools and surroundings clean and make others aware as well.
Referring to the 2024 mass uprising, he said: “You made the movement of ’24 succeed through a mass uprising. Did any single party do it? Everyone did it together, didn’t they?”
He said it had already been proven that the united effort of young people can bring about great change. But the responsibility does not end with a movement, he said. They must also come forward to rebuild the country and build a better Bangladesh.
Expressing concern about air pollution in Dhaka, the prime minister said the capital’s air is becoming steadily more polluted, putting children in particular at a range of health risks. He stressed the need to plant more trees to tackle the situation.
He told the students the government has already taken steps to make the country clean and green, but those efforts cannot fully succeed without the active participation of young people.
Closing his speech, the prime minister said: “You are the future. I have two requests of you: keep the country clean and plant more trees. This is your country, and the responsibility is yours too.”
