Journalists working in Madan upazila of Netrokona have held a human chain and sit-in, giving a 24-hour ultimatum for the arrest of those involved in the killing of journalist Lutfuzzaman Alif Fakir, 40, in Durgapur, and demanding their trial.

The Madan Upazila Reporters’ Club held the programme at midday on Sunday (18 October) on the Madan-Kendua road in front of the club.

It was chaired by club president Nurul Haque Ronu, correspondent of Manab Zamin, and moderated by general secretary Md Saker Khan, correspondent of Dainik Dinkal. Speakers included vice-president Tofazzal Hossain of the Jugantor, joint secretary Foyez Ahmed Hridoy of the Kaler Kantho, organising secretary Nizam Uddin Ahmed of the Amar Desh, assistant organising secretary Ali Azgar Ponir of Khola Kagoj, finance secretary Nur Muhammad Jorip of Protidiner Sangbad, and member Zakir Hossain Chowdhury of the Daily Sangram.

“We have learned that the murdered journalist had told the police earlier that he could be shot dead,” club president Nurul Haque Ronu said. “But the police took no action. We understand police arrested one accused, named Apurbo, yesterday. We call on the government and the home minister to arrest all the accused within the next 24 hours and to ensure a trial within 15 days. If those involved in journalist Alif’s killing are not arrested quickly, journalists will launch a tough movement.”
