Restlessness is natural amid the busyness, disappointments and stress of daily life. When the mind is unsettled it is hard to settle to any work, and everything can seem gloomy. At such moments, nothing is better for bringing peace back to the heart than the remembrance and supplications taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in his Sunnah.
Whenever the Prophet (peace be upon him) faced worry, distress or danger, he sought refuge with Allah through particular supplications. Below are four short ones for easing restlessness and worry.
1. A prayer for mercy
Meaning: “O Allah, it is Your mercy alone that I hope for. Do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye, and set right all my affairs. There is no god but You.” (Sunan Abu Dawud: 5002)
2. A prayer for calm in hardship and distress
Meaning: “There is no god but Allah, the Mighty, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the mighty Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth and Lord of the noble Throne.” (Sahih Muslim: 6672)
3. A prayer for refuge from worry and stress
Pronunciation: Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal hammi wal hazani, wal ‘ajzi wal kasali, wal bukhli wal jubni, wa dala’id daini wa ghalabatir rijal.
Meaning: “O Allah, I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, and from the burden of debt and being overpowered by others.” (Sahih al-Bukhari: 2694)
4. A prayer against restlessness
Pronunciation: Allahu Allahu rabbi, la ushriku bihi shay’a.
Meaning: “Allah, Allah is my Lord; I associate nothing with Him.” (Sunan Abu Dawud: 1525)
When feeling restless and troubled, it is advised to perform ablution, pray two rak’ahs of voluntary prayer, and recite these supplications again and again with concentration and faith. May Allah free our hearts from unrest and fill them with peace.
