The Special Response Battalion (SRB) has arrested seven people over the leak of the question paper for the recruitment exam for the post of assistant upazila youth development officer at the Department of Youth Development. Five of those arrested are officers or employees of various government offices; the others are members of a question-leak ring.
The force is due to hold a news conference on Friday afternoon, 16 October, to give details.
Those arrested are Asadul Habib, an office assistant at the defence ministry; Jahangir Alam, an official of the National Board of Revenue (NBR); Rubel Islam, a data entry operator at the Rangpur divisional office of the Department of Environment; Nur Mohammad (Niloy), an NBR official; and Mofizul Islam alias Rafi, Hasinur Rahman Sujon and Emdadur Rahman, members of the question-leak ring.
On 10 October the question paper spread on social media before the exam was due to start at 11am. After the leaked questions were found to match the real paper, the authorities decided to suspend the exam.
By then many candidates had arrived at exam centres from far away. Angered by the last-minute suspension, they blocked roads and protested in various parts of the capital.
A five-member committee headed by Md Mahfuzul Alam Khan, an additional secretary at the youth and sports ministry, was set up to investigate. It was first told to report within three working days, but the deadline was later extended.
