The Maheshpur Press Club of Jhenaidah district has carried out a clean-up at Katka, Kochikhali and Dimerchar in the Sundarbans during a two-day trip, to protect the environment and the forest’s biodiversity. Members removed plastic, polythene and other waste that the tide had carried in and left stranded in parts of the forest.
The waste collected at the three sites was handed to Tanvir Hasan, the officer in charge at Katka, and Dilip Majumder, the officer in charge at Kochikhali, for proper disposal.
According to people familiar with the area, the tide brings plastic, polythene and other waste that does not break down into the Sundarbans. Left stranded on the forest floor, it pollutes the environment for a long time and threatens the forest’s wildlife, biodiversity and waters.
The trip took place on 15 and 16 October. Shariful Islam, the assistant conservator of forests at Sharankhola, welcomed the work and thanked the club’s members.
Sheikh Mohammad Ali, president of the Sharankhola Press Club, and Arindam Debnath, a life member of the Bagerhat Press Club, helped with the clean-up.
The Maheshpur team was led by the club’s president, Abdur Rahman, and its general secretary, Md Babor Ali Babu. Abul Kasem, Mahamudul Hasan Milon, Osman Goni, Mehedi Hasan Siraji, Nazmul Hasan, Abdul Hamid, Shamim Ahmed, Abdul Halim Chanchal, Khalid Hossain, Asadul Shahadat Hossain and Naim took part.
