Abdel Fattah al-Sisi came to power in Egypt in 2013 after a military coup that toppled Mohamed Morsi, the country’s first democratically elected president.
The former army officer has held on to power for more than a decade since. Now he has announced that he will leave office. He made the announcement on Saturday (17 October) at a graduation ceremony at Egypt’s Military Academy.
Sisi, 71, said his presidency would end in 2030. His departure from power is now settled, and there is no room for further discussion on it, he said.
“Egypt’s constitution will not be touched,” Sisi said. His current presidential term is six years. “My presidential term will end in 2030. The matter is completely final,” the Egyptian president said.
“I will not leave Egypt until capable people take on the responsibility of the country,” he added. Human rights groups estimate that more than 60,000 “political prisoners” are held in Egypt’s prisons, more than 1,000 of them women.
According to rights groups, many prisoners, including former president Morsi and several opposition leaders, have died in prison because of medical neglect and inhumane conditions. Sisi’s remarks come amid a volatile situation in the region.
