Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced a halt to all shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the vital passage out of the Persian Gulf. Iran took the decision after a series of attacks on oil tankers in the sea lane in recent days. According to the state news agency IRNA, the strait will stay completely closed for now and no country’s ships will be allowed to use it.
In a stern warning on Saturday (17 October), the IRGC navy said anyone who defied Iran’s order and tried to cross the strait would pay a heavy price. Ships would learn in flames, it warned, how dire the cost of relying on US forces could be.
The events began when a large oil tanker caught fire after striking a mine laid in the Strait of Hormuz. From the following day, attacks on at least two more oil tankers were reported near Saudi Arabia’s waters. After this run of explosions and attacks, and with tension gripping the whole region, Iran closed the waterway completely.
