Local journalist Shamimul Islam Faisal said fire service personnel reached the scene after receiving news of the fire early in the morning and brought it under control. A rescue operation then began.

Police said 18 tourists were staying at the resort when the fire broke out. Rimon Ghosh, in-charge of the Inani police outpost, said police and the fire service carried out the rescue jointly. They are checking whether anyone else is missing.

The fire service said the resort had no fire safety licence. Its management had also been warned in June to improve its fire safety arrangements.

A five-member committee led by the deputy commissioner has been formed to investigate the cause of the fire and the overall situation.
