Measles symptoms kill three, including two young children, in Sylhet

Two children and a woman have died with measles symptoms in the Sylhet division over the past 24 hours. The divisional health directorate confirmed the three deaths on Sunday (9 August) morning, taking the number of measles-symptom deaths in the division to 125.

The three died while under treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, the Shahid Shamsuddin Ahmed hospital and the Habiganj 250-bed district hospital. The two children who died were a boy aged 3 years and 4 months and an 8-month-old infant. The woman who died was Barna Rani, 18.

Meanwhile, 271 patients are currently under treatment with measles symptoms at various hospitals in the division. In the past 24 hours, 18 new cases were confirmed in laboratory tests, and 91 suspected patients were admitted during that time.

According to the health directorate, 827 lab-confirmed measles patients have been identified in the division from 1 January 2026 to Sunday (9 August). Six of the children who have died were confirmed measles patients; the rest were suspected.
