A six-story building has collapsed in Satya Niketan, in the Indian capital of Delhi, with fears that several people are trapped. At least four people have been rescued so far. A rescue operation is underway to find survivors under the rubble.
The building was used as a paying-guest accommodation. Officials said it collapsed around 1:30 p.m. local time on Sunday.
One eyewitness said at least 50 students were believed to have been in the building at the time of the collapse, though most were thought to be “at home” since it was a Sunday.
A student present at the scene told the news agency ANI that they could hear people crying for help from under the rubble.
Video from the scene showed large crowds gathering after the collapse. Firefighters are working to rescue those trapped in the rubble. One video circulating online shows a person trapped under a concrete slab, with several bystanders trying to move it to free him.
At least 12 fire service vehicles have been sent to the scene to assist with the rescue operation, along with disaster response team members working alongside firefighters.
Satya Niketan, near Delhi University’s South Campus, is home to a large student population. Members of several student organizations have also arrived at the scene to assist rescuers after hearing news of the collapse.
