Rizq, or provision, is one of the greatest blessings Allah gives. We usually think of rizq as food and wealth alone, but that is not right: rizq covers everything that sustains our lives.
Rizq is determined by Allah. The Holy Quran says: “There is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision, and He knows its dwelling place and its resting place. All is in a clear record.” (Surah Hud, 6) In another verse Allah reassures us about rizq: “And in the heaven is your provision and whatever you are promised.” (Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 22)
We often think that if we had not done a certain thing, relied on a certain person, or had a certain person in our lives, we could not have managed: our wellbeing would have suffered, or we could not have eaten or dressed well. This is nothing but a misconception.
We sink into despair and break down over small things, which is nothing but the prompting of Satan. Even after effort, people’s provision sometimes rises and falls; this is simply a test from Allah. Our Lord tells us: “We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and loss of wealth, lives and crops, but give good tidings to the patient.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 155)
In worldly life, people worry a great deal about provision, depending on their circumstances. But Allah has reassured us not to worry or be anxious about it: “And He will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him.” (Surah At-Talaq, 3)
Our provision will reach us at the right time, in the right place and from the right source, by Allah’s command. What greater blessing could there be than Allah Himself taking responsibility for our provision? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Allah wrote down the destinies of all creation fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, when His Throne was upon the water.” (Muslim, 2653)
Imam al-Shafi’i is quoted as saying: “What is written for you will be yours even if it is on top of a mountain, and what is not written for you will not be yours even if it is between your two lips.” So there is no reason to worry about provision.
So let us not be anxious about our provision, and let us rely at every step of life on our Lord, the Provider. May Allah grant us that ability. Amin.
