Bangladesh is set to sign an agreement with the World Bank on a new partnership framework. A government delegation will meet the World Bank within the next two to three weeks to finalise the terms and work plan.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury gave the information to journalists on Friday afternoon during a break in the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group in Bangkok.

“This year is very important for Bangladesh, and the international organisations understand that well,” the finance minister said. He added that the main international development partners, including the World Bank, the IMF and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), are now working very closely with Bangladesh to speed up the country’s economic development and deal effectively with the global crisis.

Reaffirming the elected government’s determination to carry out its election manifesto and development programme, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said work is under way on a specific development framework agreement for the next five years. There are no differences over the agreement’s main policy points, he said; they will be finalised by drawing up a joint work plan through talks.

Earlier in the day the finance minister attended sideline meetings at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok, where he held a series of meetings with representatives of Bank of America, Google, the IMF, Standard Chartered Bank and the global rating agency Moody’s. The meetings held fruitful discussions on Bangladesh’s overall economic situation, debt management and reforms in the financial sector.
