“Do your duty properly without listening to any rumours, misinformation or conspiracies. If you make an unintentional mistake, you will be pardoned. But there will be no leniency if you deliberately engage in unprofessional conduct. Action has been taken against those who earlier took part in phone conversations with conspirators. Everyone must learn from that. At one time money was taken from drug spots, and accused people were released in exchange for money. All this has now been stopped.” The inspector general of police (IGP), Ali Hossain Fakir, said this to police in the field.
The IGP said this in an exclusive interview with a national daily about the country’s overall law and order, the role of police in the field, action against controversial and fugitive police officers, and plans for the days ahead.
In a long interview at his office on Tuesday evening, he spoke openly about various sensitive matters.
Asked what his message was to police members who leak information, the IGP said those who are passing inside information out while in service will be brought to book through investigation, and that process has already begun. Police members who served party interests in the past are now on the run, he said, and proper action will also be taken against serving officers who are in contact with fugitive officers.
Asked about conspirators in the police, the IGP said they could be counted on one hand and none would stay beyond the law. A rumour is being spread that those recruited during the 17 years of the fascist era will lose their jobs, he said; those spreading such rumours will also be identified and dealt with.
