At least nine people, including a woman, have been killed in a fire on a sleeper bus in Greater Noida, in India’s Uttar Pradesh. Many others were injured. The bus was reported to be carrying 35 passengers, and the death toll is feared to rise.
The air-conditioned bus was travelling from Noida to Mahoba with 35 passengers on Wednesday. It caught fire around midnight near Dayanatpur village, close to Jewar, on the Yamuna Expressway. Most of the passengers were asleep at the time, so many took a while to realise there was a fire.
“I was asleep. Someone said the bus was on fire. We started screaming in fear,” one passenger told the news agency ANI. “Getting out of the bus was not easy, because smoke had covered everything. Somehow we got out.”
Once it became clear there was a fire, chaos broke out on the bus. Many passengers broke the glass windows and jumped out. Police and firefighters reached the scene after being informed. It was not yet clear whether any passengers were trapped inside the bus.
