The fourth session of the 13th parliament begins at 3:30pm on Monday (9 November). Under the constitution, a new session must be held within 60 days of the end of the previous one, and this session is mainly being held to meet that requirement.
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir summoned the session on 14 October under the powers given by Article 72(1) of the constitution.
The parliament secretariat has completed its preparations. The session may run for 10 working days, until 20 November.
Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said the session would be short and that five or six bills could be placed and discussed.
It is being kept short because a new session must be called in January. As a rule, the year’s first session sits in January each year, so the next session, the first of 2027, may sit in mid-January.
The parliament’s business advisory committee will meet on the opening day to finalise the length and schedule of the session.
Officials said the session will include question time, notices on matters of public importance and general discussion.
Beyond the set agenda, if the opposition proposes a general discussion on a current issue of public importance, time may be set aside for it. The much-discussed constitution amendment proposal will not be placed in this session, however. A special committee on constitutional amendment is drafting the proposal, and it is reportedly planned for the fifth session in January.
