The Jatiya Sangsad complex has been declared a smoke-free zone. At a meeting of parliament’s Business Advisory Committee on Sunday, the Leader of the House and Prime Minister proposed declaring the complex smoke-free, and every member of the committee readily accepted it.

The Parliament Secretariat said this in a press release.

The meeting was held at the parliament building with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, the committee’s chairman, presiding. Besides Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, it was attended by committee members Leader of the Opposition Dr Md Shafiqur Rahman, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal, Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam Moni, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman, ATM Azharul Islam and Opposition Chief Whip Md Nahid Islam.

At the meeting, the prime minister asked about progress on installing solar panels at parliament. Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal, convener of the sub-committee concerned, said the solar installation would be able to generate 7 megawatts. It would meet demand of about 6 megawatts while parliament is in session and less at other times, and the surplus would be fed into the national grid.

The prime minister then gave specific instructions to provide energy storage for the solar power produced at the parliament complex.
