State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Chowdhury MP has called on former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country during the student-led mass uprising, to come back and face trial. He said the government would even pay for her ticket home if needed.
He made the call on Saturday (7 November) at a large rally organised by the Nandail upazila unit of the BNP in Mymensingh to mark National Revolution and Solidarity Day.
“You killed people and fled, and now you only make threats on social media,” the state minister said.
“But the people of Bangladesh have seen through those threats. So now you have to come back. Not in secret: come right now. If necessary, we will give you the ticket.”
Those who in recent years took away people’s right to vote, engaged in corruption, looting, enforced disappearances and killings, and shed the blood of women and children martyred in the July uprising will be tried on Bangladeshi soil, he said.
He also warned that the fugitives would be brought to the dock in handcuffs.
Addressing local party workers and residents, the state minister said the country was moving forward on the path of development under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Any conspiracy or unrest by those who want to obstruct this progress must be resisted, he said, and he urged people to hand over anyone suspicious to law enforcement quickly.
On the upcoming union parishad elections, he said BNP-backed candidates would be nominated on the basis of people’s views and surveys. “Elect candidates who are capable and who stand for development and democracy,” he said.
Thanking the party workers and residents who came from the unions and wards, he said: “I am working as your worker, and I want to go on serving you. On the field of development, on the streets and against every conspiracy, we will stay united.”
The rally, held at the Chandipasha school ground in Nandail, drew a large crowd of local BNP leaders, activists and members of the public.
