The government has set a target of procuring 300,000 tonnes of paddy and 550,000 tonnes of rice this Aman season. Of the rice, 500,000 tonnes will be parboiled and 50,000 tonnes atap (sun-dried). The procurement price has been fixed at Tk 35 a kg for paddy, Tk 49 for parboiled rice and Tk 48 for atap rice.
Food Minister Afroza Khanam Rita confirmed the figures at a press conference at the Secretariat on Sunday (8 November).
Last year the government bought parboiled rice at Tk 50 a kg, atap rice at Tk 49 and paddy at Tk 34. It bought 153,000 tonnes of paddy in total and procured 900,000 tonnes of rice.
The minister said Aman paddy procurement will run from 24 November to 28 February 2027. Rice procurement will start on 1 December and also run to 28 February.
She said a meeting of the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee (FPMC) discussed the country’s overall food situation, the Aman procurement drive, grain stocks, the public distribution system and grain imports.
At the press conference, the food minister said that, in line with the pledges of the “Election Manifesto 2026”, the government’s main aim is equitable economic and social development and lasting state capacity. To that end, work is under way to build a modern farming system, she said, adding that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is working tirelessly to end hunger and poverty and to secure food and nutrition.
Ensuring fair prices for what farmers grow is the main driving force behind the procurement drive, the minister said.
