Workers have returned to work at garment factories in Savar, Ashulia, Gazipur and Narayanganj after the labour unrest.

On Sunday (8 November), production picked up again at most factories in these industrial areas as workers came in, and the ready-made garment industry began returning to normal.

Payment of garment workers’ October wages began on 5 November. Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), expects most factories to pay wages today.

Industrial Police chief (additional IGP) Md Israil Hawlader said on Sunday that the situation in the industrial areas had begun to return to normal and workers had joined work at most factories. When trouble was seen at one or two factories in Ashulia, a holiday was declared there, and the workers then left the factories peacefully.

Md Israil Hawlader said there were no protests, clashes or road blockades in the industrial areas on Sunday, and the overall situation was normal.

Meanwhile, 33 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in industrial areas of Dhaka, Gazipur and Narayanganj. BGB confirmed this in a statement on Sunday morning.

The BGB members are on security duty in Savar, Ashulia and Mirpur in Dhaka; Shibu Market, Jalkuri, BSCIC industrial estate, Chashara, Kanchpur and Shimrail in Narayanganj; and Chandra, Palli Bidyut, Mouchak, Ambagh, Kashimpur, Naojor, Bhogra Bypass, Gachha and Salna in Gazipur.
