A large section of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s central committee leaders outside its “super five” boycotted a discussion meeting the central body organised on National Revolution and Solidarity Day. Angry that the programme left them no chance to speak, vice-presidents, joint general secretaries and leaders of other ranks stayed away from the meeting and gathered outside the TSC auditorium of Dhaka University.
It happened on Sunday at the TSC auditorium.
The aggrieved leaders said the programme, organised by the central Chhatra Dal, gave no speaking slot to the vice-presidents and joint general secretaries who hold key posts. Yet the “super five” of the Dhaka University unit and leaders of other units got to speak from the stage. They were angered at being denied a voice at their own event despite holding important central posts.
Several Chhatra Dal vice-presidents, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “The Dhaka University Chhatra Dal super five get to speak on stage, but central leaders cannot speak there. Yet this is essentially the central Chhatra Dal’s own event. So they unanimously boycotted the programme.”
In their account, leaders of other units were given the stage while those with important central responsibilities were left out. They see it as an organisational slight, and for that reason decided not to join the meeting and to stay outside the auditorium.
Despite the boycott by part of the central leadership, the organisation’s president Rakibul Islam Rakib and general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir carried on with the meeting in the TSC auditorium.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed attended as chief guest. Leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal from Jagannath University, Dhaka College, and the Dhaka Metropolitan North and South units were present.
The central vice-presidents who boycotted and stayed outside included Ejazul Kabir Ruel, Manjur Alam Riad, Riad Rahman, HM Abu Zafar, Safi Islam, Shahjahan Shaon, Touhidur Rahman Awal, Sree Mithun Kumar Das, Sajib Majumder, Ariful Islam, Abul Bashar, Hafizullah Hira, Kazi Ziauddin Baset and Oliuzzaman Sohel.
Among the joint general secretaries, Faruk Hossain, Masudur Rahman Masud, Hasanur Rahman Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman Rubel, Bayezid Hossain, Mohiuddin Rubel, Ibrahim Kardi, Tanvir Ahmed Tanu, Tarikul Islam Tarek, Farhan Arifur Rahman, Asaduzzaman Rinku, Golam Kibria, Shakil Ahmed, Shakil Chowdhury, Shahadat Hossain Manik, Shamim Hossain, Ibrahim Khalil, Sohel Rana, Raju Ahmed, Saddam Hossain, Zahid Hasan Shakil and Shahinur Rahman Shahin took part in the boycott.
Others who stayed outside included assistant general secretaries Afzal Rahman and Ashikur Rahman Sarkar, assistant organising secretary Mohammad Arif Billah and library affairs secretary Touhidul Islam, along with several more central leaders.
Attempts to reach the central Chhatra Dal president and general secretary for comment were unsuccessful.
