Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, one of India’s oldest Muslim organisations, has protested against the demolition of mosques and the harassment of madrasas in various parts of the country.

The protest was made at the annual meeting of the organisation’s governing council in Nuh district, Haryana, an Indian news outlet reported on Sunday (1 November).

Three resolutions were put forward at the meeting. They said a mosque is not just a building but a symbol of Muslims’ faith and collective identity.

In the resolutions, Jamiat also called the uniform civil code discriminatory by nature and rejected it outright.

The resolutions expressed deep concern at the harassment of madrasas in the name of recognition, baseless propaganda against them, and attempts to stir controversy around minority educational institutions.

They called on the central government and the relevant legal authorities to stop all such actions immediately and to ensure the rights and protection madrasas are owed under the constitution.

At the same time, Jamiat asked madrasa authorities to keep and maintain their land deeds, approved building plans, identity documents of students living in hostels, and audited accounts, with full transparency.

The resolutions expressed deep concern at the growing trend of targeting mosques, Eidgahs, dargahs and other religious sites across India.

A mosque is not just a building, they said, but a symbol of Muslims’ faith and collective identity and a practical expression of the religious freedom guaranteed by Articles 25 and 26 of the constitution.

Stressing the importance of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, the resolutions said the law’s main purpose is to protect the religious character of places of worship and to prevent historical disputes from being reopened.

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani opened the meeting by raising the flag.
