Twelve teachers at a college in Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur could not get their only examinee through. The sole student from Kandir Hat School and College who sat this year’s HSC examination failed. Last year, too, no student from the institution passed. That a college section with 12 teachers could not see its one candidate pass has raised questions locally about its learning environment and the quality of teaching.

The only candidate, who sat the exam in the humanities group this year, failed one subject. When no student passed last year either, it drew discussion and criticism across the district, and the principal at the time promised better results. The institution, which has since been left almost without students, has also been caught up in lawsuits and disputes over posts.

Rafiqul Bari, newly appointed acting principal of Kandir Hat School and College, said the college was founded in 2011 but has still not been brought under the MPO (government salary support) scheme. It now has 16 teachers and staff, including office assistants.

The principal says that because the college is not on the MPO list and lacks the necessary buildings and facilities, good students are not keen to enrol, and student numbers have fallen.

Years after its founding, the college’s infrastructure and its shortage of students remain unresolved. That even its only candidate failed despite 12 teachers has set off fresh debate about its place in the local education system.
