Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that while young officers may have been involved in politics as students, it should have no bearing on their careers. Urging them to remain professional and neutral in their duties, he said their political identity from student days must in no way be reflected in their working lives.

He made the remarks as chief guest on Sunday afternoon, November 1, at a briefing and introductory meeting for officers newly joined in the 45th BCS (Police) and BCS (Ansar) cadres, held in the Home Ministry’s conference room at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

Congratulating the new officers, the home minister said, “In the superior service, your foremost duty is to uphold law and order in the state and, through that, ensure a favourable environment for all of the country’s activities to be carried out smoothly. Administration, development, the overall security of society and the people’s peace of mind depend to a large extent on your work.”

Giving firm instructions, he said, “In your service life you must always maintain discipline and follow the service rules, and you must carry out the lawful orders of senior officers.”

The minister said the police and Ansar are entirely different from other cadre services and work in highly confrontational and challenging conditions. Correct decisions have to be made in a moment, he said, which makes intelligence, professionalism and presence of mind essential.

He called on the new officers to show the utmost caution and judgment in enforcing the law. He also issued a stern warning that the image of the police force must be upheld and that power must not be abused under any circumstances.

The event was chaired by Home Ministry Senior Secretary Monjur Morshed Chowdhury. IGP (in charge) and Additional IGP (Administration) A K M Awlad Hossain and Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud, director general of the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party, spoke as special guests.

In the 45th BCS examination, 80 officers were recommended for the BCS (Police) cadre and 25 for the BCS (Ansar) cadre. Following a notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration, 65 officers in the BCS (Police) cadre and 19 in the BCS (Ansar) cadre joined the Home Ministry today, November 1.
