Local government elections may be held in January next year, election commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar has said.
He said so on Thursday afternoon while talking to journalists at the Election Commission in Agargaon about upcoming local elections, by-elections and other current issues.
“The commission is considering holding the elections later, avoiding public examinations,” he said. “Because of annual exams, the elections will not be held in November-December. I hope the elections will begin in January.”
“We had announced tentative dates,” he said. “Then we saw that annual exams were starting at all educational institutions. There are also issues such as students’ exams being pushed back because of flooding. So the EC is considering holding the elections after taking everything into account, including Ramadan, Eid, the Puja festival and the SSC and HSC exams.”
“The Election Commission has not postponed the dates under any pressure from the government,” Anwarul Islam said. “Rather, the commission announces dates after considering the realities, the law and the constitution.”
